Substrates for Sample Preparation
Surface-sensitive microscopy needs a substrate flatter and cleaner than the feature being studied. SPI supplies HOPG and muscovite mica that cleave to atomic flatness, polished silicon and sapphire wafers, ITO-coated conductive slides, and exfoliated 2D materials.

Overview
In scanning probe microscopy and surface science the substrate is part of the measurement: any roughness it contributes is indistinguishable from the sample. Highly ordered pyrolytic graphite and muscovite mica solve this by cleaving — peel off the top layer with tape and a fresh, atomically flat, contamination-free surface is exposed in seconds. Where conductivity or transparency is needed the answer differs: ITO-coated slides and coverslips are conductive yet optically clear, silicon wafers give a flat reference surface with a well-characterised oxide, and sapphire offers hardness and chemical inertness for high-temperature work. SPI also supplies magnesium oxide and molybdenum disulfide substrates, silicon nitride membranes, polymer films, AFM stainless steel disks, and exfoliated hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenides for 2D materials research.

Models

HOPG Highly Ordered Pyrolytic Graphite
SPI Supplies offers HOPG from two distinct sources, each processed differently but of comparable excellent quality.

Muscovite Mica Substrates
SPI Supplies also provides instructional video guidance on techniques for cleaving mica sheets prior to use.

Silicon Wafers
Silicon chip substrates are supplied as small flat pieces for general sample support, calibration, or as a base for further thin-film deposition.

Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) Coated Slides & Coverslips
SPI Supplies provides technical data and a product selection guide to help customers choose the correct resistivity and format for their application.
Silicon Nitride Both Side Wafers
The wafers are supplied in multi-piece packs to support batch processing workflows.

2D Materials
Exfoliation-grade hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenide crystals, stable in ambient air.

Sapphire Substrate
Sapphire substrates from SPI Supplies are single-crystal sapphire, prized for their excellent optical, physical, and chemical properties.

AFM Stainless Steel Disks
Stainless steel substrates are especially useful when magnetic sample holders or magnetic AFM stages are used, since the disc itself is attracted to the mounting stage.
