EM Maintenance Parts
Electron microscopes depend on parts that wear out. SPI supplies tungsten and LaB₆ filaments, platinum and molybdenum apertures, scintillators and YAG viewing screens, and silicon and conductive AFM probes.

Overview
Certain microscope components are consumable by design. A tungsten filament has a finite life measured in tens of hours and is expected to be replaced; LaB₆ cathodes last far longer and give greater brightness, at higher cost and with a stricter vacuum requirement. Apertures accumulate contamination and eventually degrade beam quality, so platinum and molybdenum discs are replaced on a routine schedule. Scintillators lose efficiency as they age, dimming the secondary electron image until the detector is refurbished. AFM probes are the extreme case — a tip may last a single session, and both silicon probes for general imaging and conductive platinum-coated probes for electrical modes are ordered in quantity. Keeping these in stock is the difference between a microscope that runs and one that waits.

Models

Platinum Disc Apertures
Platinum disc apertures are precision-drilled metal discs used to define the electron beam path in the condenser and objective lens systems of SEMs and TEMs.

Molybdenum Disc Apertures
Molybdenum disc apertures are the alternate metal-aperture line offered alongside platinum, made to the same exacting standards for hole size and hole placement.

Tungsten Filaments
Tungsten filaments are hairpin-type electron-source cathodes used in the electron guns of thermionic-emission SEM and TEM instruments.

DENKA M-3 LaB6 Filaments / Cathodes
DENKA M-3 lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) filaments are single-crystal electron-gun cathodes offered as a higher-brightness alternative to tungsten hairpin filaments.

P-47 Powder Scintillators
P-47 powder scintillators are the SEM detector scintillators with the fastest response time in the SPI Supplies lineup, well under 80 ns.
YAG / YAP Single Crystal SEM Scintillators
Discs are supplied pre-sized for specific detector mounting geometries across major SEM brands.
TEM YAG Viewing Screens
Screens are available across a range of standard diameters and two thickness options to match different TEM viewing screen assemblies.

SPARK Pt Conductive AFM Probes
SPI Supplies distributes the line in three resonant-frequency variants, 70, 150, and 350 kHz nominal, sold in packs of 10.

Scout Silicon AFM Probes
Rigorous inspection during manufacturing keeps spring constant and resonant frequency variation to a minimum from probe to probe.
