Specimen Storage

A specimen that took hours to prepare can be ruined in storage by dust, humidity or oxidation. SPI supplies grid storage boxes, SEM mount storage, desiccating cabinets, membrane boxes and SPI-Dry inert-gas sample preservers.

SPI Supplies — Specimen Storage

Overview

Preparation is often the most expensive part of an analysis, and the prepared specimen is frequently irreplaceable — a sectioned biopsy, a failure analysis sample, an archaeological fragment. Yet the threats in storage are mundane: dust settling on an exposed grid, humidity encouraging oxidation or mould, physical damage from careless handling. Purpose-made storage addresses each. BEEM and Slide-A-Grid boxes hold TEM grids individually in numbered positions so they can be found again without being handled. Mount storage boxes keep SEM stubs upright and separated. Desiccating cabinets hold a controlled low humidity for bulk storage, and SPI-Dry preserver capsules seal a specimen under inert gas where even ambient air would degrade it.
