Overview
The Kammrath & Weiss Tensile/Compression Module is an in-situ mechanical testing platform that mounts on an SEM stage, and on a limited range of AFMs, like an oversized specimen, allowing static or dynamic observation of tensile and compressive deformation under the electron beam. Opposite-pitched lead screws keep the specimen's midpoint essentially stationary as it elongates in both directions, keeping the region of interest centered under the microscope. The standard module ships with PC-controlled DDS-3 microprocessor electronics and MDS software supporting cyclic testing, flexure compensation, modulus of elasticity recording, and crack recognition, with a simpler manual-controller starter system also available. It accommodates a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics, glass, coatings, welded and soldered joints, minerals, wood, and other organic materials.
In-Situ SEM Mechanical Testing
The module fits onto most SEM specimen stages, and can also be placed under a light microscope, AFM, laser, or Raman microscope on small standoffs, for static or dynamic observation of surface changes, crack growth, delamination, and slip-plane formation under controlled mechanical load.
PC-Controlled Electronics and Software
The standard DDS-3 microprocessor electronics and MDS software package offer menu-guided test routines well suited to cyclic testing, along with automatic compensation for the device's own flexure, online modulus of elasticity recording, crack recognition, and ramping. A simpler starter system with a handheld manual controller and USB data output is available as an alternative.
Extensive Configuration Options
Load cells from 10 N up to 10 kN, an extensometer with sub-100 nm resolution, heating from room temperature to 800 degrees C or cooling to minus 100 degrees C with PID control, video extensometry, image capture, and more than 30 custom specimen clamp designs are all available as options.
Broad Material Compatibility
The module is used across metals, ceramics, glass, ceramic bulk materials and layers, galvanic coatings, soldered and welded joints, minerals, wood, and other organic materials, with specimen dimensions up to 60 x 10 x 5 mm.
